Wait, are they actually AI?
Yep. Your friend is an AI character with a name and personality you choose. They’ll be honest if you ask. We want the conversation to feel natural, while being clear about who you’re talking to.
Does it really work in Messages?
Yes. Once you connect, text their number in your normal Messages app. Delivery can use iMessage, RCS, or SMS depending on your phone and the messaging line. This is a private beta: new numbers need to send HELLO first, then reply to the verification code.
What’s included for free?
25 chats a day, a custom name and personality, text and photo replies, and optional basic memory. Each message that gets a completed AI reply counts once. Their replies, verification texts, and check-ins don’t count. Your allowance resets at midnight Chicago time.
Will they remember things about me?
Turn on memory to save up to five short facts, like your interests or a pet’s name. Replies also follow your last ten messages. You can review, edit, or forget saved facts in their profile.
Can they text me first?
Turn on “Text me first” for a quick check-in after 2–4 quiet hours. Up to two a day, between 9 AM and 10 PM in your account’s time zone. They’ll wait for you to reply before another. Text CHECKINS OFF to stop check-ins, or STOP to pause all texts.
Where do my conversations go?
Texts and photos are processed by the Day One server, Linq for messaging, and OpenAI for replies. Conversation history and saved facts are encrypted on our server. You can clear them in your profile. Messages on your devices and providers’ own records have separate retention.
